Ask the Pharmacist

Is it safe to buy prescription meds online?

It can be safe, if you stick to the following two hard-and-fast rules: First, steer clear of any Web site that allows you to obtain a medication without a valid prescription. If an online site is willing to break the law and bypass the need for a prescription, it might also be willing to fill your prescription with counterfeit or sub-quality merchandise.

Second, make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate online pharmacy by looking for the “VIPPS” symbol, which stands for “Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Site.” This means it is administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

There can be financial benefits to getting your prescriptions through the mail. For instance, you can often get a three-month supply of medication with only one co-payment. On the other hand, one of the downsides of an online pharmacy is that you cannot walk up to the counter and get your questions answered on the spot by a pharmacist.
